Discover and enjoy a trip to the “Lost City of the Incas”, Machu Picchu, Peru; one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

This amazing tour includes a visit to the city of Cusco, the capital of the Inca Empire. There still remains a large amount of archaeological evidence that tells about its glorious and majestic past. In this part of your trip, you will visit Cusco’s main constructions such as Sacsayhuaman, Koricancha, Kenko, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay. Sacsayhuaman is built in such a way that a single piece of paper will not fit between the stones. It is surprising to see the perfection with which these stones have been put together without any mud mixture between them, as is also to imagine how these enormous stones were transported there and carried uphill.

This Peru trip continues with a visit to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, an area from Pisac to Ollantaytambo. Located along the Urubamba River, it was an important agriculture production center. You will be able to appreciate the monumental stone fortress of Ollantaytambo, and the Inca agricultural terraces and the artisan market of Pisac.

Finally, you will visit Machu Picchu citadel. This archaeological complex of Machu Picchu, declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983, remained hidden behind the mist of a humid forest of exuberant vegetation until the year 1911, when the North American explorer, Hiram Bingham, made public the famous finding of this stunning Inca sanctuary.

DAY 01 / CUSCO CITY – SACSAYHUAMAN – KENKO – PUCA PUCARA – TAMBOMACHAY

At 1 p.m., we will meet you in your hotel lobby to begin your tour in Cusco (3,350 m/10,998 ft.), visiting the Main Square, the Cathedral, and the Sun Temple or Koricancha.

We continue out of the city to visit nearby Inca ruins: Kenko, Tambomachay, Puca Pucara, and the amazing Sacsayhuaman Fortress, built tactically in a hill, dominating Cusco, famous by its huge carved stones assembled with accuracy that astonish, forming the external walls of the complex. Some of these stones exceed the 9 meters (29.50 feet) high and weigh more than 350 Tons (771,617.80 pounds). Return to your hotel.

DAY 02 / ALPACA FARM – PISAQ – OLLANTAYTAMBO  

Today we will visit the Sacred Valley of the Incas (2,800 m/9,184 ft.). Along the way, we will visit Awanacancha, a weaving center and alpaca farm. You will observe the differences between llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, and guanacos, as well as the different varieties of potatoes and corn, that are special to the Sacred Valley. Following, we will visit the majestic archaeological site of Pisac, located on top of a mountain in the valley. We will see hundreds of terraces for agriculture, where the Incas farmed corn, potatoes, and quinoa. The religious and astronomical side of the Incas will be visible, at this sight. Afterwards, we will descend towards the town of Pisac, where we will find a colorful artisan market. You will have the opportunity to try some of the local delicacies during our lunch break.

After lunch, we will go by Calca and Urubamba on the way to the Ollantaytambo Fortress, built to guard the entrance of this part of the valley and protect it from possible invasions of the settlers of the jungle; this is made up by a series of terraces (each one put on top of the other). We will have the chance to walk by the mini streets of the town and with this have a good idea how was this military, religious and cultural center during the Inca Empire.

DAY 03 / MARAS – MORAY – CHINCHERO – AGUAS CALIENTES 

We will pick you up at 8am, then we will drive to Maras Salt Mines. There are 3,000 salt pools, which act as evaporation chambers. They spill out of the mountain and down the mountainside at 12,000 feet above sea level. Owned by local farmers, these pools have become the main economic activity for all the locals.

After the mines, we will drive to Moray Inca Archeological Center. The Inca used Moray to study farming. They built terraces and experimented with different vegetables. You will see each terrace of Moray and the differences in growth they provided.

We will then drive to Chincheros, where we will see some Inca terracing, used as the perfect location to farm potatoes. The entire Inca civilization got their supply of potatoes from here. We will also see one unique, colonial church, that was built by the Spaniards, on the top of the Inca palace. Finally, we will visit one final textile center called Chinchero Textile center.

We will head back to Ollantaytambo, where you can enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants, then we will take an amazing 2-hour train ride to Aguas Calientes where you will be transferred to your hotel, to prepare for your visit to Machu Picchu.

DAY 04 / AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU

We encourage you to wake up early in the morning to get to the bus station for one of the first shuttle-style buses, starting at 5.30 a.m. This bus will take about 25 minutes to get to Machu Picchu (2,350 m/7,710 ft.), the great “Lost City of the Incas”.

Once there, you will have a guided 2-hour tour of the Sanctuary, visiting the Royal Palace, Main Square, the Circular Tower, the Intihuatana (sacred solar clock), the Royal Rooms, the Three Windows Temple, the Condor, the Circular Tower, and the Cemeteries. After the tour, you will have time to explore the Sanctuary on your own. If you have tickets to climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountains, your guide will then direct you to those trails. Due to popularity, be sure this is arranged at least two months in advance.

Once you are finished exploring Machu Picchu, you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu town) for lunch. Later you will take the train back to Ollantaytambo, where a person will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel in Cusco.
